How to uncover the accident history of any used car

A fresh coat of paint hides more than rust. Here is how to find out what really happened to a used car before it landed on the forecourt.

Why accident history matters more than you think

Repaired accident damage is one of the most common hidden defects in the used-car market. A vehicle that has been in a significant collision can look immaculate after professional bodywork β€” but structural damage, misaligned suspension geometry and weakened crumple zones are rarely visible to the naked eye during a test drive.

Insurance companies, roadworthiness testers and repair workshops record these events independently. A VIN history report aggregates those records, giving you a damage timeline that no seller can erase or hide.

Five sources where accident records live

  1. Insurance claims databases. When a car is involved in a collision serious enough to trigger an insurance claim, the insurer logs the vehicle's VIN alongside the date, type of damage and repair cost. These records persist even after the vehicle is sold or the policy lapses.
  2. National roadworthiness test records. MOT and TÜV inspections frequently note existing bodywork repairs, uneven panel gaps and signs of structural repair. A chain of test certificates that suddenly records new damage β€” followed by a clean test β€” is a textbook indicator of a repaired accident.
  3. Auction and fleet disposal records. Ex-fleet and ex-rental vehicles pass through auction houses where condition reports are filed. A car that moved through auction shortly after a high-mileage year may have been repaired and re-sold to hide an incident from that period.
  4. Manufacturer and authorised workshop records. In many markets, authorised dealer repair visits are recorded against the VIN. A cluster of workshop visits at an unusual mileage point β€” particularly for structural or airbag components β€” can signal post-accident repair work.
  5. Cross-border import and re-registration. Cars with serious accident damage are sometimes exported to countries with less stringent inspection regimes, repaired cheaply, and re-imported. A VIN history spanning multiple countries with registration gaps is a strong signal that warrants deeper investigation.
